A vibrant mixed media collage featuring eight traditional-style Kokeshi dolls.
Originating in Japan’s Tōhoku region in the 19th century, Kokeshi are wooden dolls handcrafted on a lathe by skilled artisans. Characterized by their simple forms—large heads, limbless bodies, and elegant silhouettes—these dolls are adorned with hand-painted details such as hairstyles, seasonal flowers, and foliage.
Once made as toys for children, Kokeshi have become cherished collector’s items and unique decorative pieces. This artwork makes a thoughtful gift for Japan enthusiasts and lovers of traditional folk crafts alike.
Printed as a fine art giclée on archival matte paper using rich, pigment-based inks to ensure vivid color and long-lasting quality. Available in three sizes: A4, A3, and A2.
Each print is sustainably packaged in a biodegradable cellophane sleeve and shipped in a sturdy, board-backed envelope.
About the art
I had a lot of fun creating this design! It began with black screenprinting ink and a series of experiments that produced a variety of interesting textures and marks. I then scanned those elements and moved into Photoshop to arrange the composition and add colour. It’s a true blend of analogue and digital techniques, resulting in a piece with a playful, tactile quality. Using hand-crafted methods felt especially appropriate, as it reflects the spirit of Mingei—the Japanese folk art movement that celebrates everyday craftsmanship.
